peace to everyone!
when mr. alvero and i played at our first gig 5 yrs ago at the legendary austrialian-owned bar along anonas extension (fox square bar), we only called ourselves "shirley". (without the phrase "ang bandang"). if you read our blog or attend our gigs, you should already know why we chose this name.
we only introduced our band as "ang bandang shirley" near the time mr. rabara was invited to become our permanent drummer back in June 2005.
i wrote this entry so that all of us will use these words correctly. probably, the best way to introduce our band is in filipino because "ang" and "bandang" (which in english are equivalent to "the" and "band which is" respectively) are in filipino.
"palakpakan po natin ang bandang shirley" (clap your hands for the band which is shirley)
please refrain from saying "sila po ang ang bandang shirley". i am quite irritated by the duplication of the word "ang". ("ang-ang" is not really pleasant to the ears).
although it's ok with me if you use "the band which is shirley". i don't know about my other bandmates but mr. alvero and i discussed this already and we both agreed that this should be the correct way of calling our band.
sorry to taglish haters. shirley is an english name and "ang bandang" is in filipino, specifically from the tagalog dialect. so i guess introducing us in taglish would be just fine.
"please clap for ang bandang shirley. mahilig sila mag-eat"
yes boys and girls. i'm bored and irritable. i need a hug. hahaha
peace again to everyone. mwah mwah xoxo hugs hugs
ean
let's eat, yesss!
ReplyDeletexoxo! :D
haha, i would think that if your band is called 'ang bandang shirley', the ang should be repeated hehe. but i guess you have to explain 'ang bandang shirley grammar' to the emcees. :)
ReplyDeletesimple lang ang rule: wag doblehin ang "ang" kasi it sounds stupid (oops hehe), but the name is "ang bandang shirley", so don't forget the "ang" when writing down our name. we're not "bandang shirley" either hehe.
ReplyDeleteEAN HUUUUG! kowloon. kowloon. kowloon.
kabab! kabab! kabab!
ReplyDelete(craving. hehe.)
Pag may host na stoopeed, sasabihin niya "Here is the Ang Bandang Shirley band!"
ReplyDeletehahaha nung binabasa ko kala ko Selena having a bad day lang

sa hap-chan yang photo na yan ha. kelan yan? at bakit wala ako dyan?
ReplyDeletethat was after a toti meeting, zig.
ReplyDeletehmmm actually naisip ko pala na mas correct ang "the band that is shirley" or "the band called shirley" (which is the way i usually translate it for helen's foreign friends).
question: can "the band which is shirley" be alternately used with "the band named shirley" or simply "the band shirley"?
ReplyDeletegusto ko yung mga variations: Sherlee, Sherli, Sherlie, Sherrlie, Sheryl, Shirell, Shirelle, Shirely, Shirl, Shirlea, Shirlee, Shirleen, Shirleigh, Shirlene, Shirlinda, Shirline, Shirlley, Shirly, Shirlyn and Shurlee.
dati, tungaw was introduced as "the tungaw group" hahahahaha
or "the band named shirley" :D or just simply "the band shirley" :D
ReplyDeleteselena my english compatriot, what is the rule again as to when to use "which" or "that"? i just play things by ear usually :)
ReplyDeletehahaha mga irks sa band names. ako naman i hate it when they mispell ciudad to cuidad. ang hirap ba namang i-check kung baligtad yung u and i????
ReplyDeleteang alam ko, pag that, restrictive clause, tapos yung which ginagamit sa non-restrictive clause.
ReplyDeletein the case of ang bandang shirley, dapat "the band that is shirley" kasi crucial yung information sa restrictive clause na that is shirley. kung "the band which is shirley" (which should come with a comma before which, by the way), parang incidental lang yung shirley info, and that shouldn't be the case kasi yun yung most important part about that phrase.
haha nerd.
agree! kapag "which," kailangan "the band, which is shirley" pero ang pangit 'non at hindi tama kasi hindi naman parang addendum lang yung shirley.
ReplyDeleteang rule sa "which" at "that" --- "that" introduces essential clauses. "which" introduces non-essential clauses.
however, like most grammar rules, there is an exception (kaya nalilito mga tao eh haha). when "this," "that," "those" or "those" have already introduced an essential clause, you may use "which" to introduce the following clause--whether it's essential or non-essential :)
nerd ba ko? O.C. lang haha
eh yung mikey nga mikee at mickey at mikeey wala nang tumama! hahaha
ReplyDeletenorwegian ata si uncle mick.
ReplyDeletehahahahaha naglabasan na ang mga grammar nerds! :D my wife&i usually have these sort of discussions too over dinner or what not :) parehong manunulat kasi hahahaha :D
ReplyDeleteso mikey's a viking? spam spam spam spam...
ReplyDelete"the tungaw group" hehehe love it :p
ReplyDeletesakin basta kumpletong binanggit/sinulat yung band name natin as:
ReplyDelete"ANG BANDANG SHIRLEY" regardless the punctuation or it's correct english translation coz in the the end its all about the music diba?
:)
ReplyDeletethanks selena. kowloon tayo please.
ReplyDeleteah ok. sorry. hahaha. dapat pala kumunsulta muna ako sayo. :D
ReplyDeleteang cute naman ng cuidad. haha
ReplyDeleteahh talaga. nakikita mo pa ba yun?
ReplyDeleteuncle mick.hindi mikey. si uncle mick yung may ari ng fox square bar.
ReplyDeletehahahaha oks kathy. sorry. wala akong magawa kaninang madaling araw.
a rose by any other name still rocks.
ReplyDeletealthough by transformational-generative parameters in translation, it should be "The Shirley Band"
