what's the buzz

hi guys, things have been quiet but a lot of happenings have happened without much updating here.

jing went to singapore and came back, we played our first out of town gig,  don laudencia of aizo jammed with us, we've been writing songs and demoing like crazy. a lesson learned: if the album takes this long to come out, better get started on the next one early, i think. haha.

i think i've been a bit too bratty, i wanna apologize to my bandmates and the other people who we (mostly i) inconvenienced at subic because i was too demanding haha. you have no idea how often a phenomenon hunger tantrums are to this band. we want food now haha. also, there's this common joke people say when they find out that i'm part of shirley, it's always "wag mo kami kakalimutan pag sikat ka na a" and i never liked that, although it seems like there's this little distance that inserts itself when you're gonna play a gig and you wanna get in the zone and you wanna be the singer of the song and the song makes you feel all these feelings because you wrote the songs about something and i guess im still getting used to the idea that im sharing these feelings to other people i don't know

haha what a problem, drama queen band person kind of monologue. it's something sort of like kevin garnett, being intense all the time. i wanna be kevin garnett. intense all the time.

-------------------------------------

i've been talking with mikey of the great ciudad, and jason of the superb pedicab, and we had this conversation about how when our albums come out it'll be the big thing, the sophomore pedicab album (it's amazing), ciudad's bring your friends (their best album to date), and even the third itchyworms lp (i haven't heard anything from it though) is probably coming out at the same time that themesongs is slated to (finally) come out. exciting times. it makes me reminisce about the days when i got excited about new albums coming out. i'm not as up to date these days because of school and the radio show and the band and real life, but i love how we're part of something like this. ang bandang shirley has come a long way. haha. yes.

-------------------------------------

another thing, i've been really into the old dear catastrophe waitress album by belle and sebastian. i love how i'm not this super big fan of the band all the time, but there are flashes of intense love for the gospel according to stuart murdoch and co. i think that's the proper fandom, detached intense periodic fandom. like one day you'll start craving to hear patintero/habulan/larong kalye and you go crazy trying to find your copy of the rizal day sessions version, wondering what the themesongs version sounds like. sana may shirley fandom na ganun. haha. anyway i'm listening to dear catastrophe waitress right, and im singing along to the songs, and then i hear stay loose, the last track on the album. i think i never listened to it this much before, and it just reminds me of a lot of good feelings. i'm gonna be playing guitar for next week's gigs, cause the attorney and donald are both busy, so i'm gonna be channeling stay loose.

catch us tonight at magnet katipunan, tuesday the 29th there also, and the 30th at cafe saguijo for chubibo's rawr album launch :)

long rambly post. i miss you band! jam na tayo gusto ko na tugtugin live yung taksil haha

empty hearts

when jing cannot play, we become sad.
the last two gigs were jingless and we were so depressed. we were like lost kids, juveniles with no direction in life. it seemed that we just came from north korea. although funsiya (bigskymind) gig and whale (subic) gig were ok, we still felt the emptiness inside our hearts.

jing would have controlled our actions. he would have told us to stop laughing without any reason. he would have whipped our butts if he found out we were telling stories about a mommy, giving happy brownies to her son. The son then realizes that his daddy all of a sudden was present. so with a frightened tone he says: "mommy, bakit nandiyan si daddy? diba iniwan na niya tayo?" Then he lies down in a fetal position.

jing would also have kicked our shins (he kicks shins because he only wants the thigh part for it is a leg of ham) if he found out that we drank too much cossack vodka mixed with guava juice. i can imagine him kicking my shin while discreetly dropping some sleeping pills in my plastic cup.

using his lawyer madskillz, he would have prevented zig from sleeping away from the rest of the band (zig slept in a hotel were taken by cars stayed. i think he already wants to be traded). he would tell zig that their family should have hired a driver instead.

if he saw me reading the book (tome of amplify emo a.k.a. message in a bottle by nicholas sparks) that i brought, he would have splashed omega pain killer on my eyes so that i couldn't see.

of course the only thing he would not have prevented was our constant demands for MORE food. being the grown man he is, he would have asked for more longganisa during breakfast.

it's a good thing donald laudencia (of aizo fame) came to the rescue. although he is not yet gaddilike and shirleylike (to become shirleylike, you must eat lots of pancit canton without chewing, and gain 50lbs above the normal weight for your height) he played the guitar well. i, on the other hand, sucked. compared to jing, i am a bass-waste. jing is the bassmaster general and i will forever look up to him.

anyway, the point is we need jing. look at the next picture. this was taken by ate salinas inside the starex on the way home to mr kabab (yes, mr kabab is our home). look at how sad owel is. that's because jing wasn't there to fill our empty hearts.

ps. i hope ate salinas won't shoot me because of all my grammatical errors.

mall tour, etc.

We had a gig yesterday at the wonderful robinson's metro east. marcos highway reprezent, sta lucia reprezent, far far away and pretty early for a gig: we set up around 430pm and played from 4:45 til around 5:20. 8 songs? i think.

this wasn't the first shirley mall gig though, we played at the market! market! activity center once upon a time. jing and joe were absent so ean played the bass and i played the guitar, that was supposed to be a one hour set. we played all the songs we knew, we doubled all the solo parts (4 measures instead of 2, 8 measures instead of 4, haha), and even with the extended spiels ("warm crowd!" haha) we were only able to play around 45 minutes. that's what short pop gems get you, short sets. haha.

anyway back to metro east, we hadn't gigged in a while (the last one was the 30th of last month) so we really really missed each other hahaha. the attorney and the chanteuse had new haircuts, kathy had a tan from galera, joe just came back from the mountains, zig had an ice cream party at the office, heidi had a shoot with sam concepcion, and ean was being devious haha.

a jingmobile ride and a bit of mall exploration followed by a large scoop of vanilla softserve dipped in chocolate (for me) and then we were on stage. the set was theme song - patintero/habulan/larong kalye - sa madaling salita - wealth of nations - masamang damo - xmaslites - bato - tsuper. long set. haha.

we met wayne! hi wayne. he works for level-up games and he's a multiply friend, and apparently he's heard of the band before, which is very very cool. pa-post nung pics natin! :)

after the gig we tagged along to oi wag dito's practice at pinoy penguin, where i was interviewed for our band's documentary about how important the band members were individually to the band, and i guess i was thinking about how it felt to see them again after the time off and i was talking about what their part in the band was when i made this great realization that i think i've talked about before but i think i put it in better words last night. i don't remember it verbatim, but i remember the feeling after the interview and it was kind of big.

i want the docu and the album to come out na haha.

see you guys tonight at route 196, bring your friends! happy birthday bandmates!
